Program harnesses the magic of music to teach kids about living green

Music is a powerful thing, isn't it? There's just something about putting words to a tune that taps into our emotions and turns on that part of the brain that helps us make memories.
That's the reason you can never seem to get a catchy jingle out of your head. It's also the reason that your emotions go haywire when the music keys up during an emotional scene of your favorite show.
A kids program called Team Green World is tapping into the power of music to teach kids about going green. Team Green World — or TGW — got its start in 2012 as the brainchild of Ross Orenstein and Donna Britton-Bukevicz. When the songwriter/musician pair met at the Pensacola Beach Songwriters Festival, they decided to put together Orenstein's knack for writing children's music with Britton-Bukevicz's work in writing green-themed songs to develop a program that teaches kids about ecological issues through music and the arts.
"I realized the value of writing songs to help spread the mission to care about our planet, become a green hero and 'go green,'" said Britton Bukevicz when I asked her how TGW got its start.
So what exactly does TGW do? The program, currently based in Pensacola, Florida, and Warrenton, Virginia, works with community groups and individual children to promote environmental stewardship. In Virginia, TGW has recently partnered with the Boys & Girls Club of Fauquier County to offer music programs as well as one-on-one voice mentoring sessions that teach kids about going green through music and art activities.
At the moment, TGW programs can only be found in Virginia and Florida, but Orenstein and Britton-Bukevicz hope to expand their partnership with the Boys & Girls' Club so that they can offer their special brand of "eco-edutainment" across the country.
